First Night

First Night

I was able to see Rob for about 5 minutes at 5:30pm. He was still on the breathing tubes and being kept asleep. His color was good and he pretty much looked like his old self. The only exception was a fat lip, due to pressure from breathing tubes while they used some sort of imaging machine (CT? but my tired mind might not have heard that right) during or at the end of the surgery. At the point that I got in to see him, they were waiting to do a chest x-ray and if that looked OK, they would slowly bring him off the Propofol and get the breathing tubes out.

As of 8:00pm, they knew the chest x-ray looked good and planned a very slow wake-up. At my 4:00am check, he had been brought off the Propofol, a little earlier but was not quite ready engage at that time. He was, however, aware enough to be a bit agitated (not angry – probably just fighting having tubes down his throat). They were able to give him something to mellow him out so he could come out of anesthesia a bit more but feel less agitated. He seems to have reached the point where he can engage some now and can hopefully get the tubes out. His nurse is waiting on someone from Respiratory to come and double check that he is ready for the tubes to come out. Here’s hoping!

The CTU nurse has been excellent. She’s basically in there one-on-one for the duration and has been so patient as I have called through the night to check on him. I’ll call her again in a couple of hours, since I am not allowed in again until 11:00am.
